#WHETurAPPETITE & Fish Tacos @ Whet Kitchen.Bar.Patio

Recently, VANEATS.ca has introduced another one of their dining packages -- this time at Whet Kitchen Bar on Granville Island.  I had previously been here before a year ago for dinner, so I was interested in visiting again to try out some of their specialties.  #WHETurAPPETITE consists of three food items and two sleeves of beer for $30.



To start was the salad, a prawn, shrimp, and wild mushroom salad on top of a bed of arugula salad.  The highlight was definitely the pan seared prawns, though I also enjoyed the mushrooms as well, some of which were cooked and others, raw.  I love arugula, and lo and behold, there was a lot of arugula.



The coconut scallop ceviche was interesting.  The scallops were quite fresh and tasty, and while there were a lot of hand peeled shrimp hiding in the coconut milk, I wish there were more scallops! The coconut milk was light in taste with the citrus juices.



With a choice of either the red honey-curry coho and the crispy duck leg, we opted for the confit duck leg which was topped with a sweet chili ginger sauce, yam & plantain chips, sesame seeds, grilled plums.  The duck leg was good for sharing, and I enjoyed the ginger sauce which added an Asian flare to the dish.

The deal also comes with two sleeves of Russell Brewing's angry scotch ale.  I like ales, and I liked this.



We also ordered the fish tacos ($14) which came with both salmon and tuna seasoned with cajun spices and grilled.  This was definitely more of a pacific northwest take on the taco and it was nice with the salsa, though I thought the salsa verde was quite vinegary. Maybe I put too much.


The service at Whet was good, but they were serving the dishes quite slowly and one at a time, but I think it was because they thought we wanted more time to evaluate each one.  All in all the deal package is of pretty good value, especially with the two sleeves of beer. Just the duck and beer would already add up to around $30, so it's like the salad and ceviche are freebies! Along with a carb dish (I'd recommend the chicken manicotti) this would be a solid meal for two.  #WHETurAPPETITE is available on VANEATS.ca until January 17, 2013.
