As much as I love going to izakayas, I find that I often just head to Guu because it's reliable and I've been visiting it for years. However, since I had a group voucher, we headed to Hapa Izakaya on Robson for dinner.
Apparently, the item to get is this pork belly lettuce wrap ($9.49). Although it was descriped to be "crispy" pork belly, I didn't find it to have any crisp to it. Rather, it was actually slightly tough. However, it was not bad with the apple yuzu jam, pickled red onions and butter lettuce.
The prawns in the ebi mayo ($8.99) were quite large and nicely coated in a spicy mayo sauce. I was pleased that they were quite crunchy and seemingly fresh.
The salmon press sushi ($9.99) was on the fresh sheet for that day. It was an interesting sushi, with chopped sockeye salmon on top of a pressed rice base, but we found the dollop of miso paste on top to be a bit overpowering. It was pretty good after some sauce was picked off though.
For our serving of carbs, we hd the chipotle beef curry ishi-yaki ($9.99) which the server mixed at our table in a hot stone bowl. It had an interesting texture because of the curry sauce and egg -- almost like it was lightly mixed with mozzarella. The rice was sizzling hot and I didn't mind the rich flavours of the curry. Not life-changing, but good irregardless.
