Since going to the grand opening of Black+Blue, I have wanted to go back for lunch. After making the trek there, we found it was closed for lunch on Saturdays and Sundays, which didn't make any sense in our minds. Too lazy to think of where else to go, we went across the street to another one of Glowbal Group's restaurants, Italian Kitchen.
Edit: I just realized that LetsGoForDinner.com offers some deals for Italian Kitchen, for both lunch and dinner!
Oh right, I almost forgot to say; Dorothy and I kept complaining about this and I promised her I would mention this here. We sat at the corner with the plush benches, which were very shallow, and we kept sliding off the seat! Not fun. (Doro is quite small too, so it's not just me.)
For starters, we got complimentary ricotta donuts. I don't really know where the ricotta plays in, but there is probably a bit of it mixed inside the dough. The shape kind of reminded me of the johnny cakes from The Reef, but it was more like a sour-cream glazed donut from Tim Horton's -- similar texture, but not as sweet nor as heavily glazed.
I was feeling somewhat adventurous that day (just a bit) and opted for the breakfast pizza ($14.95), as recommended by the server. It was a personal size pizza a bit bigger than an 8x11 paper, topped with fingerling potato slices, eggs, green onions, onions, bacon, and a bit of burrata cheese. Although it looked quite impressive, it was alright. The crust was not the same as the ones normally on pizzas from Panagos or Pizza Hut. Instead it had more of a bun-like texture to it. The middle part with the toppings was somewhat soggy, which I didn't like. I ended up eating half of the pizza and the rest of the toppings -- the potatoes were good, but everything else was really just alright.
Dorothy ordered the wild mushroom benedict ($16.95), which came with truffle hollandaise and parmesan potato hash. It smelled absolutely delicious because the truffle oil had a really strong aroma. Tastewise, it wasn't quite as strong, but still good. Can't comment on it too much since I just tried a little bit. I do think that this was a better choice than my breakfast pizza though.
Rating: ★★
I wasn't impressed with my breakfast pizza, though Doro liked her benedict. I probably would've had a better experience if I had that, but the price is quite steep compared to other brunch places, like Twisted Fork. I just realized the benedict is a bit more expensive than Cafe Medina's fricasse too!
